HEALTH--MORE FUNDS FOR PATIENT CARE AT ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Department of Health has approved almost a quarter million
dollars in additional funding for the Environmental Health Centre
in Fall River.

The increase in funding will bring the centre's operating budget
to $1.225 million for fiscal 1997-98, up from the original
approval of $1 million.

In addition, the Department of Health is working with the centre
to ensure its programs are effective. Dalhousie Medical School,
which operates the centre, has been asked to outline criteria for
evaluating the centre's programs and services.

"The people of Nova Scotia have repeatedly told the government
that health care is among their top concerns," said Health
Minister Jim Smith. "This increase is in keeping with the
government's overall commitment to an improved health care
system."

Some of the extra funding will be used to hire a second physician
to treat patients, said Dr. Roy Fox, centre director.

"Patients will benefit from this announcement," he said. "The
funding will help the centre to achieve what it has set out to
do."
