Early Intervention Programs in Nova Scotia

Early Intervention Programs (EIP) are designed for parents of children, between birth and school entry who are at risk for poor developmental outcomes because of a developmental delay or risk for delay. EIP’s are mandated to provide support and information to this group of families.

Service delivery is governed by a Standards and Guidelines manual with the programs operating according to the principles of family-centred practice. In a child’s natural setting - home or community-based - information on early childhood developmental, inclusion, support and advocacy help the family meet their own needs and the needs of their child. Early Interventionists can accompany the family to medical and therapeutic appointments, assist in the process of transition to either a centre-based early childhood program or elementary school program and participate as a developmental team member with others who have a role to play in supporting the child’s development.

Early Interventionists are trained in early childhood special education and have a thorough knowledge of both family centred practice and the principles of adult education. They work closely with families, community-based agencies and government departments contributing to the delivery of comprehensive, collaborative services to their population interest.

There are currently 18 early intervention programs in the Province, each one operated by a not-for-profit Board of Directors, serving approximately 450 families.

For information regarding the locations of Early Intervention Programs, please contact your local District Office of the Department of Community Services.
