About the rooms

All new and replacement long-term care rooms are designed and built based on current best practices for infection control.

Rooms are designed to help improve daily life and support independence, comfort and safety of residents. Every resident will have a private bedroom and washroom. Residents will also have access to indoor and outdoor activity spaces and amenities.

Why more rooms are needed

Adding more rooms will help meet the growing need for long-term care. New rooms will also provide long-term care space for people who are waiting in the hospital (and free up hospital beds for surgeries and other medical treatments).

Providing the care Nova Scotians need and deserve is a core solution in Action for Health, government’s strategic plan to improve healthcare in Nova Scotia.

Funding

Owners and operators of long-term care facilities pay for the construction of new and replacement long-term care rooms. Government provides an annual operating budget to operators and owners after residents move into long-term care facilities. The annual operating budget covers expenses like mortgage payments and the staffing required to provide care.
