IMAGE INFORMATION

John McEwan was the son of Michael McEwan, a Scotsman from Glasgow, and his Mi'kmaq wife Victoria Siah (this name, spelled Sire, Sayer, and Siah, derives from the Acadian French name Cyr).

John McEwan's first marriage was to Mary Charlotte Pictou of Bear River. They had six boys and a girl: John Noel, b. 18 December 1892; Josephine Elizabeth, b. 28 January 1896; Olive, b. 31 October 1897; Michael, b. 9 November 1899; Henry George, b. 12 March 1901; Joseph Solomon, b. 15 April 1902; Mary Louise, b. 12 May 1904. [Darlene Rikker-Kay to R. H. Whitehead, personal communication, April 1991.] Surviving children from this marriage were John, Olive, Michael, Harry and Solomon. His second marriage to Minnie Bessie McLaughlin produced James Richard, b. 3 January 1908 (later chief at Bear River); Ann, Larry, Phyllis and Eva. [J. Richard McEwan. Memories of a Micmac Life. W. D. Hamilton, ed. Fredericton, The Micmac-Maliseet Institute, University of N.B. 1988:ix-x.] This picture shows John with Mary Charlotte and four children, so it must date later than the birth of Michael, born 9 November 1899. It was probably taken in the spring of 1900.
