IMAGE INFORMATION
Joe Charles (1873-1940) and his daughter Elsie (b. 1916), Hectanooga, Digby County, Nova Scotia. Joe Charles was a well-known guide and canoe-builder. One of his canoes is displayed in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Halifax. The photograph was taken at his house. His daughter Elsie Charles married Isaac Basque. She says of her father that he raised her from the time she was six, until she went away to Residential School at the age of 13. She can remember going out to look at the Northern Lights with him, and holding onto his leg because she was afraid of those lights up in the sky. She loved him dearly, and he taught her how to shoot, to snare rabbits and weasels and skin them to sell, how to tie a salmon fly and fish with it. They would go off salmon fishing and sleep out under the stars on pallets he made from fir boughs. Joe Charles always told his daughter, "You must get education," and she did. In 1997, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro, having graduated from there in 1937. She was 81. [Elsie Charles Basque to R.H.
