Acquired from the subject's nephew, Jeremiah Bartlett Alexis. "Stephen Bartlett, alias Stephen Lexi, alias Wissow, Chief of Mi'kmaq Indians of Gravel Pit Indian Reservation, about 2 miles from Yarmouth, N.S. Born at Salmon River, Yar. Co., N.S., in 1819; died at age of 83 (about 1902)." Stephen Bartlett was called Stephen Green, or "Wissow," because he wore green clothes, according to his nephew. He was born the "same year as Queen Victoria." [Nova Scotia Museum Accession Book III:4578.]
