Description

This is to advise that on September 10, 2024, CertainTeed Canada, Inc. registered the Antrim Gypsum Project, Halifax County for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to develop a conventional gypsum mining operation along Lake Egmont Road, in Cooks Brook, Nova Scotia. The Project Area defined for this Project is approximately 602 hectares (ha) in size, combined of both private lands owned by CertainTeed (PIDs 40228009, 40228017, 41517319, 40767014, 41152893) and Crown lands (40228389, 40228371, 40212409, 40229676, 40959983, and 40959975). The open pit and associated Project infrastructure will occupy approximately 170 ha. The Project will operate between the hours of 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday to Friday, and will produce gypsum and anhydrite at an estimated rate of 2.0 million tonnes per year. The gypsum and anhydrite will be transported via trucks to the Port of Sheet Harbour for shipment to manufacturing facilities in eastern North America, reducing the need for CertainTeed Canada Inc. to ship gypsum and anhydrite overseas, to continue to meet the demand of their gypsum plants. Truck transportation and loading associated with Project activities will occur between 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Construction is expected to start in 2025, operations commencing in 2027, and initiation of closure activities by 2050, pending permitting and approvals.
