Mount Uniacke Quarry Expansion Project

Description

On 23 September 2025, Northumberland Capital Corporation Inc registered an Additional Information Addendum for Mount Uniacke Quarry Expansion Project, Hants County for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to expand the existing quarry from 4 ha to 40 ha to allow for the continued production and stockpiling of aggregate used in a wide variety of local construction and infrastructure projects. The proposed undertaking will take place approximately 2.5 km northeast of the community of Mount Uniacke, Municipality of East Hants, Nova Scotia. The access road to the quarry is located off Uniacke Mines Road, approximately 2.3 km northeast of the intersection of Trunk 1 and Uniacke Mines Road (44.915°N, -63.8141°W). The project's lifespan will be an estimated 30 to 50 years with continued production of an average of 30,000-50,000 tonnes of aggregate annually, based on current market demands. The commencement of the proposed project is Summer 2026.

On 29 August 2023, Northumberland Capital Corporation Inc first registered the Mount Uniacke Quarry Expansion Project, Hants County for Environmental Assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act. On 16 September 2024, the Minister determined that the registration information was insufficient to make a decision, and that additional information was required regarding surface water resources.

Minister's Decision

On 12 November 2025, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change released a decision concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)(b) of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditions.
