Spar Road Wal-Mart Development

Description

On September 1, 2005, Wal-Mart Canada Corporation submitted an Environmental Assessment Registration Document for the proposed Spar Road Wal-Mart Construction in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to construct and operate a 12,400m2 retail store and automotive centre, and plan for future expansion, at Spar Road in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The property upon which the project is to be constructed, is partially occupied by a wetland (i.e. greater than 2 ha in area), and as a result Wal-Mart is required to register this project this project as a Class I undertaking pursuant to the Environmental Assessment Regulations under the Nova Scotia Environment Act.

Minister's Decision

On September 26, 2005, the Minister of Environment and Labour released a decisionPDF Download Link (PDF:330k) concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)b of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act.

The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditionsPDF Download Link (PDF:43k).

The proponent is required to obtain all other necessary approvals, permits or authorizations before commencing work on the undertaking.

Public comments regarding this project were accepted from September 1, 2005 to September 15, 2005. Comments submitted on the Registration Document are available at the Department of Environment and Climate Change Library.
