Hazardous materials and chemicals have beneficial applications and are used regularly in businesses, industry, institutions, and homes in the province of Nova Scotia. Hazardous wastes are often produced when these materials are used, are spoiled, or are no longer wanted. These hazardous wastes need to be handled properly to avoid impacting the environment.
The Nova Scotia Environment Act prohibits anyone from causing an adverse effect on the environment when handling hazardous materials. To prevent negative impacts on the environment, the department regulates many hazardous materials, especially when used in larger quantities by businesses, industry and institutions.
