There is an administration fee of $15.15 (includes $1.98 HST).
No refund will be made where the applicant is entitled to less
than $3.00.
The refundable amount is based on the full calendar months
remaining in registration period.
There will not be a refund issued on the following reduced fee
registration vehicles:
 A vehicle for which the registration has no expiry date,
A farm or fisherman truck,
A vehicle owned by the Province of Nova Scotia,
A vehicle with a restricted nominal fee,
Miscellaneous equipment,
A service truck,
A farm tractor,
An antique auto,
An ambulance,
A hearse,
Trailers registered for 1,500 kilograms or less.
Commercial vehicles registered for a full year and have a
weight of 5,001 kilograms or more may have their registration
refunded one-twelfth of the annual registration fee for each month remaining
in the period, less the administration fee of $15.15 (includes $1.98
HST). The Registrar must be satisfied that the vehicle is sold or transferred,
replaced by a vehicle of light commercial weight, junked, repossessed,
has left the province, or the plate owner is deceased.
Trailers registered for a weight of 1,501 kilograms or more, for any registration
period, may have their registration refunded one-twelfth of the annual
registration fee for each month remaining in the period, less the administration
fee of $15.15 (includes $1.98 HST).
Refunds on staggered registrations may be issued provided
that plates/stickers and permit are returned.
Procedure For Refund:
Plates/Permit/Stickers accompanied by a refund application may
be deposited at any Registry of Motor Vehicles office
throughout the province or mailed to:

Refund cheques are issued by the Department of Finance.
Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for processing and mailing.
Since a commercial vehicle is required to be registered for the
curb weight plus the load, refunds will not be issued on
commercial registrations on the basis the registered weight
exceeded the client's requirements, unless it is clearly evident
the vehicle weight was incorrect.
