Summer Fishing

With summer upon us, options still exist for anglers across Nova Scotia. Warm water species such as smallmouth bass and perch are eager to do battle in the heat of the summer. Smallmouth bass are often found around weed beds and submerged trees. Summertime can challenge trout anglers, but find cooler waters and you’ll probably find some trout.

Mackerel fishing and striped bass fishing is beginning to pick up along the coast. Small mackerel, often called “tinkers” can be caught from wharfs across the coast with larger fish showing up more frequently as the summer continues. Striped bass frequent beaches and river estuaries and can be caught with bait and lures.

Fishing is best in the morning and evening when temperature are lower, but there is never a bad time to be on the water. Anglers are reminded to consult the Anglers Handbook and federal fishing regulations for the areas they intend to fish.
