Blair Road Pit Expansion Project

Description

This is to advise that on 25 May 2023, The Shaw Group Ltd registered the Blair Road Pit Expansion Project, Kings County for environmental assessment, in accordance with Part IV of the Environment Act.

The purpose of the proposed undertaking is to expand the existing 3.997-hectare sand pit, on PID Nos 55071898, 55492508, 55377451 and 55377550 on Blair Road, Waterville, Kings County, Nova Scotia. The expanded sand pit will occupy a maximum of 17.5 hectares (including the existing pit) of land, with an expected operational life of 20 years. The pit will support continued sand production of 30,000 tonnes/year and up to an additional 75,000 tonnes/year for new markets. The sand production will be used primarily in local construction industry.

Minister's Decision

On 14 July 2023, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change released a decision (PDF) concerning this review. The Minister has decided to approve the undertaking in accordance with Section 13(1)b of the Environmental Assessment Regulations, pursuant to Part IV of the Environment Act. The undertaking has been approved subject to a number of conditions (PDF).
