Yearly Budget Process

Each year, government goes through these steps (and more) to plan a budget for the coming year. Government also constantly monitors the economy and social situation to consider possible adjustments. Choose a step to learn more about that part of the process.

  1. The Budget

The budget outlines spending and revenue estimates for the year ahead based on government priorities. It tells Nova Scotians where their money will come from, and where it will be spent.

  2. Public Accounts

The annual public accounts, usually released in July, compare the actual financial results of the previous fiscal year to the budget plan for that year.

  3. Forecast Updates

Twice a year and on Budget Day, the government updates Nova Scotians on whether income and spending are on track, and what, if any, adjustments will be made.

  4. Capital Plan

Outlines government’s planned infrastructure spending (buildings, highways, IT) for the next fiscal year.

  5. Pre-Budget Consultations

Talking with people, businesses and community groups across Nova Scotia to understand their financial priorities. Happens throughout the year.

  6. Build A Budget

Government takes the best available economic and fiscal information and projections, along with feedback from Nova Scotians, and builds the budget for the year ahead.
