CANADA NATIONAL BALANCE SHEET ACCOUNTS, Q3 2023

In the third quarter of 2023, Canadian national wealth (the total value of non-financial assets) edged down 0.1% to $16,970.2 billion. This follows an increase of 0.6% in the second quarter of 2023. The combined value of natural resources (including land) declined, this decline was mostly offset by growth in the value of Canada's produced assets, particularly among residential and non-residential structures and inventories.

Total assets, including financial and non-financial assets declined by 0.4% to $61,947.5 billion at the end of Q3 2023, following a 0.9% increase in Q2 2023.

Household sector

Household credit market debt as a proportion of household disposable income decreased to 181.57% in Q3 2023. 

In Q3 2023, household debt payments increased to 15.22% of disposable income. Mortgage interest payments were up 13 basis points to 5.47% of disposable income, while non-mortgage interest payments rose 9 basis points to 3.79% of disposable income. Principle payments for both mortgages and non-mortgage loans contracted as a share of disposable income.

Government sector

At the end of Q3 2023, federal government net debt (book value) decreased to 32.29% of GDP. Net debt of other levels of government increased to 17.32% of GDP.

Corporate sector

The credit market debt to equity ratio of non-financial private corporations declined to 55.91 cents of credit market debt for every dollar of equity in Q3 2023, down from 55.96 cents in Q2 2023.
