US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, JUNE 2024

Month over month (June 2024 vs May 2024, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)  

Compared to May 2024, US housing starts were up 3.0% to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,353,000 units. There were decreases in single unit starts (-2.2%), and increases in multi-unit starts (+22.0%).

The number of residential building permits increased 3.4% to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,446,000 units. Permits were down for single units (-2.3%), down for structures with 2-4 units (-8.8%), and up for multi-unit structures with more than 5 units (+19.2%).

Compared to May 2023, US housing for starts were down 4.4%, with increases in single unit starts (+5.4%) and starts for structures with 5 or more units were down (-23.4%).

Residential building permits were down 3.1%, with decreases in single units (-1.3%), decreases in structures with 2-4 units (-5.5%) and decreases with 5 or more units (-6.5%)  

Year-to-date (January-June 2024 vs January-June 2023, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)   

Compared to January-June 2023, US housing for starts were down 2.5%, with increases in single unit starts (+17.3%), and down for multi-unit starts (-36.1%).

Residential building permits were down 2.3%, with increases in single units (+14.6%), decreases in structures with 2-4 units (-4.1%) and declines in structures with 5 or more units (-26.6%).
