RETAIL TRADE, NOVEMBER 2024

Monthly (seasonally adjusted,  November 2024 vs October 2024)

In Nova Scotia retail trade decreased 0.4% to $1,823 million. Nationally, retail trade increased 0.04% to $67.6 billion. Three provinces, led by Newfoundland and Labrador, reported growth in retail trade. New Brunswick reported the largest decline.

Year over year (November 2024 vs November 2023)

Nova Scotia retail trade increased 3.2% in November compared to the same month last year. Nationally, retail trade was up 1.6% year-over-year. Eight provinces reported year-over-year increases in retail trade, led by Newfoundland and Labrador. Both Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick reported year-over-year declines

Year-to-date (January-November 2024 vs January-November 2023)

Nova Scotia retail trade increased 2.0% year-to-date. Nationally, retail trade was up 1.0%. Nine provinces reported year-to-date increases in retail trade, led by Newfoundland and Labrador. British Columbia reported the only decline. 

In dollar terms, motor vehicles/parts ($5,046 million), food/beverage ($3,740 million), gas stations ($2,903 million) and general merchandise stores ($2,644 million) contributed the most to Nova Scotia's retail sales year-to-date.  

The largest year-to-date increases in percentage terms were reported in motor vehicles/parts, gas stations, and general mechandise stores.  Electronics appliances stores, health/personal care stores and sports books hobbies music stores recorded the largest year-to-date declines.  

Trends

In recent months, Nova Scotia retail sales have been more volatile than the Canadian average (common for a smaller province) and have exceeded national retail sales growth.  

E-Commerce

In November 2024, Canada's ecommerce sales decreased 1.2% compared to the previous month, declining to $4.11 billion, or to 6.1% of total retail sales.
