US RETAIL SALES AND FOOD SERVICE RECEIPTS, JANUARY 2025

Month-over-month (January 2025 vs December 2024, seasonally adjusted)

In the advance estimates of U.S retail sales and food service receipts, total sales declined 0.9% from December 2024 to January 2025. Excluding food services receipts, retail trade declined 1.2%. Food service and drinking place receipts grew 0.9%.                       

Year-over-year (January 2025 vs January 2024, seasonally adjusted)

US retail trade and food services receipts increased 4.2% from January 2024 to January 2025. Retail trade increased 4.0% and food services and drinking places sales increased 5.4%.

US retail sales were up with gains in all categories except in sporting and recreation. The fastest gains (in percentage terms) were in motor vehicles and miscellaneous stores.
