NOVA SCOTIA INTERNATIONAL GOODS EXPORTS, MARCH 2025

Year-over-year (March 2025 vs March 2024, domestic exports on a customs-basis, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia international goods exports were $541.6 million in March 2025, an increase of 4.3% compared to March 2024.

Canada's goods exports increased by 11.9% compared to March 2024. Out of 10 provinces, 8 reported a year-over-year increase. Newfoundland and Labrador reported the largest growth in exports, while Manitoba experienced the largest decline.

Year-to-date (January-March 2025 vs January-March 2024)

In the first three months of 2025 domestic exports grew 8.3% in Nova Scotia compared to the same period in 2024. Canada's exports increased 12.2% for January-March 2025, with Prince Edward Island reporting the largest gain, followed closely by Alberta. Manitoba reported the only decline.

Among broad product categories, Nova Scotia's domestic exports grew the most for other transportation equipment, chemicals/plastics/rubber products, and electronics/electrical equipment. Shipments of metal/non-metallic mineral products, metal ores/non-metallic minerals, and to a lesser extent consumer goods, were down in January-March 2025 compared to January-March 2024.

Note: there was a substantial revision to Nova Scotia exports of energy products in 2024.

The US is by far Nova Scotia's largest destination for international goods exports. In the first three months of 2025, Nova Scotia exports to the United States were up 11.0% over same period in 2024, rising to $1,199.6 million.

China is Nova Scotia's second largest export destination and exports declined 7.4% to $174.4 million in January-March 2025 when compared to January-March 2024.

Among the other significant export destinations, year-to-date exports were up sharply to Norway, Germany, and Turkey, with other notable increases to Belgium and Spain. The largest declines in year-to-date exports were to the Mexico and South Korea. 

Nova Scotia's exports to the US accounted for 71.3% of exports in January-March 2025. Massachusetts alone had a similar export value to China in the first three months of 2025. Exports were up for eight of Nova Scotia's top ten US state destinations; exports were down to Texas and Wisconsin. The largest dollar value increase was for Illinois and South Carolina.
