MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, MARCH 2025

Monthly (seasonally adjusted, March 2025 vs February 2025)                                                                            

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments decreased 1.4% to $1.069 billion. National shipments decreased 1.4% to $71.9 billion.

Manufacturing shipments were down in eight provinces. Manitoba reported the largest monthly increase in manufacturing shipments while New Brunswick reported the largest decrease.

Year-over-year (March 2025 vs March 2024)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments increased by 6.0% compared to the same month last year in 2024. National shipments increased 1.9%.  Six provinces reported increases, led by Prince Edward Island.  Newfoundland and Labrador reported the steepest year-over-year decline.

Year-to-date (January-March 2025 vs January-March 2024)

Nova Scotia's manufacturing shipments increased by 6.0% compared to the same period in 2024. National shipments increased 2.6%.  Seven provinces reported increases, led by Prince Edward Island.  Newfoundland and Labrador reported the steepest year-to-date decline.

Year-to-date shipments are up for both durables and non-durables. Non-durable goods shipments from areas outside Halifax account for the largest portion of Nova Scotia's manufacturing output.

Nova Scotia's year-to-date durable goods shipments increased 6.4%, while non-durable goods shipments increased 5.8% in the same period. In Halifax, durable goods shipments declined 1.7% and non-durables rose 3.6%, year-to-date. Outside Halifax, durables rose 16.3% while non-durables increased 6.2%.

Trends   

Periodic spikes in Nova Scotia's shipments values are not uncommon.  Throughout 2024, manufacturing shipments were stable, with volatility at both the national and provincial levels.  In March 2025, the manufacturing shipments index in Nova Scotia was above the national index average.
