US non-farm payroll employment increased 139,000 in May 2025, rising to 159.6 million persons.
The increase of 139,000 in US nonfarm payroll employment was weaker than the growth of 147,000 reported for April 2025.
The US unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.2% in May 2025. The US unemployment rate has remained at or above 4% since May 2024.
The US participation rate decreased 0.2 percentage points to 62.4%. The US participation rate has stabilized below levels observed prior to the pandemic.
The US employment to population ratio decreased 0.3 percentage points to 59.7% in May 2025. As with the participation rate, the US employment rate remains belwo pre-pandemic levels and has declined slightly since mid-2023.
