US RETAIL SALES AND FOOD SERVICE RECEIPTS, MAY 2025

Month-over-month (May vs April 2025, seasonally adjusted)

In the advance estimates of U.S retail sales and food service receipts, total sales declined 0.9% from April 2025 to May 2025. Excluding food services receipts, retail trade declined 0.9%. Food service and drinking places receipts declined 0.9%.                       

Year-over-year (May 2024 vs May 2025, seasonally adjusted)

US retail trade and food services receipts increased 3.3% from May 2024 to May 2025. Retail trade increased 3.0% and food services and drinking places sales increased 5.3%.

Year-to-date (January-May 2025 vs January-May 2024)

US retail sales were up 4.4% with gains in all categories except in electronics, gas stations and sporting & recreation. The fastest gains (in percentage terms) were in health and personal care, non-store retailers and furniture stores.  Food service receipts were up 5.2% year-to-date.
