CANADA TRADE BALANCE, APRIL 2026

Month-over-month (April 2026 vs March 2026)

In April 2026, Canada's international exports of goods rose 1.6% to $75.2 billion. Canada’s goods imports were up 0.3% to $72.4 billion. Canada's goods trade surplus widened by $1.0 billion to $2.7 billion in April 2026.

Exports rose in nine of eleven product sections, led by higher exports of energy products. Energy products were up due to higher crude oil prices arising from the conflict in Iran in March and April. Exports also rose in farm/fishing/intermediate food products, motor vehicles/parts, industrial machinery/equipment/parts, aircraft/other transportation equipment/parts, and basic/industrial chemical/plastic/rubber products. Exports of metal and non-metallic mineral products were down on lower exports of gold to the United Kingdom.

Imports rose in six of eleven product sections in April. Basic/industrial chemical/plastic/rubber products contributed the most to the monthly gain. Imports of metal and non-metallic mineral products were down in April due to lower imports of unwrought gold/silver/platinum group metals.

In real (or volume) terms, exports were up 3.0% and imports were up 0.4%.

Canada's international exports of services fell 0.9% from the previous month to $20.6 billion in April 2026. Canada's imports of services rose 1.1% to $20.5 billion. Canada's services trade surplus narrowed by $411 million to $116 million in April.

Canada’s international exports of goods and services rose 1.0% to $95.8 billion in April 2026. Canada's international imports of goods and services rose 0.5% to $92.9 billion. Canada's overall international trade surplus widened by $557 million to $2.8 billion in April 2026. 

Exports of goods to the United States from Canada rose 4.8% to $52.0 billion in April 2026 while imports of goods from the US rose 1.6% to $42.5 billion. Canada's trade surplus in goods with the US widened by $1.7 billion to $9.5 billion in April 2026. 

Canada's exports of goods to China rose 15.7% to $3.8 billion in April 2026. Canada's imports of goods from China fell 6.8% to $5.6 billion. Canada's deficit in goods trade with China narrowed by $934 million to $1.8 billion.

In April 2026, Canada's exports of goods to the European Union fell 15.6% to $3.6 billion. Canada's imports of goods from the EU declined 0.4% to $7.3 billion. Canada's deficit in goods trade with the EU widened by $641 million to $3.7 billion.

Year-over-year (April 2026 vs April 2025)

Compared with the same month in 2025:

  • Canada's international exports of goods rose 24.7% (+$14.9 billion) while Canada’s goods imports rose 7.4% (+$5.0 billion). Canada's goods trade position improved by $9.9 billion, from a deficit of $7.2 billion in April 2025 to a surplus of $2.7 billion in April 2026.
  • Canada's international exports of services were up 4.1% (+$818 million) while Canada's imports of services were up 3.5% (+$692 million). Canada's services trade position improved by $126 million, from a deficit of $10 million in April 2025 to a surplus of $116 million in April 2026.
  • Canada’s combined international exports of goods and services rose by 19.6% (+$15.7 billion) while imports of goods and services rose by 6.5% (+$5.7 billion). Canada's overall international trade position improved by $10.0 billion, from a deficit of $7.2 billion in April 2025 to a surplus of $2.8 billion in April 2026.
  • Exports of goods from Canada to the United States increased 24.2% (+$10.1 billion) while imports of goods from the US rose 9.9% (+$3.8 billion). Canada's trade surplus in goods with the US widened by $6.3 billion.
  • Canada's exports of goods to China rose 24.5% (+$755 million). Canada's imports of goods from China fell 1.5% (+$88 million). Canada's deficit in goods trade with China narrowed by $843 million.
  • Canada's exports of goods to the European Union rose 6.5% (+$222 million). Canada's imports of goods from the EU rose 13.6% (+$879 million). Canada's deficit in goods trade with the EU widened by $657 million.
