EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE, APRIL 2024

Monthly (April 2024 vs March 2024, seasonally adjusted regular beneficiaries)

In April 2024, there were 18,730 Nova Scotians in receipt of regular employment insurance benefits (seasonally adjusted). Nova Scotia's seasonally adjusted regular employment insurance usage decreased by 3,510 (-15.8%) from March to April 2024.

There were 455,990 Canadians that received regular employment insurance benefits in April 2024 (seasonally adjusted), a decline of 13,070 (-2.8%) from March 2024. 

When compared to March 2024, all provinces reported declines in regular beneficiaries except Ontario. The largest decline in percentage terms was reported in Nova Scotia.

The number of employment insurance beneficiaries amounted to 3.4% of the labour force in Nova Scotia in April 2024. Nationally, the share of beneficiaries was 2.1% of the labour force.

Year-to-date (January-April 2024 vs January-April 2023)

Comparing the first four months of 2024 to the same period in 2023, Nova Scotia's employment insurance usage was down by 0.9%. National employment insurance usage was up by 18.2% with gains in seven provinces. The largest gain in employment insurance usage was in Alberta, while the largest decline was in New Brunswick. 

Year-over-year (April 2024 vs April 2023, seasonally adjusted regular beneficiaries)

Use of employment insurance (as a share of the labour force) was lower for youth aged 15-24 and higher for workers aged 55 and older. Across all age cohorts, male use of employment insurance was higher as a share of the labour force than female use of employment insurance. 

Use of employment insurance was down for all male and females age cohorts from April 2023 to April 2024. Males aged 25-54 and 55+ saw the largest declines in employment insurance usage.

Comparing unadjusted regular beneficiaries for April 2024 against April 2023, use of employment insurance was down for all counties in Nova Scotia except Queens, Halifax, Colchester, Cumberland, and Pictou.

In percentage terms, the largest declines in employment insurance use from April 2023 to April 2024 were reported in Shelburne, Guysborough, and Richmond. Halifax and Cumberland reported the largest increases.
