EURO AREA CURRENT ACCOUNT, MAY 2024

Month over month (May 2024 vs April 2024, seasonally adjusted)

The European Central Bank reported today that the Euro Area

  • Current account surplus was unchanged at €36.7 billion.
  • Goods trade surplus narrowed by €4.5 bllion to €32.6 billion.
  • Services trade surplus widened by €3.4 billion to €14.7 billion.
  • Primary income surplus widened by €2.7 billion to €3.6 billion.
  • Secondary income deficit widened by €1.6 billion to €14.1 billion.

Compared with April 2024 the Euro Area's exports of goods decreased by 1.7% to €245.2 billion in May 2024. Imports of goods edged up 0.1% to €212.6 billion.   

Exports of services from the Euro Area increased by 1.0% to €119.4 billion while imports of services to the Euro Area decreased 2.1% to €104.7 billion in May 2024.  

Primary income receipts for the Euro Area increased by 6.3% to €109.0 billion while payments increased by 3.7% to €105.4 billion in May 2024. 

Secondary income receipts inthe Euro Area fell by 15.1% to €13.9 billion while secondary income payments from the Euro Area declined by 3.0% to €28.0 billion.
