US non-farm payroll employment increased 228,000 in March 2025, rising to 159.4 million persons.
The increase of 228,000 in US nonfarm payroll employment was stronger than the growth of 117,000 reported for February 2025.
The US unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage point to 4.2% in March 2025. The US unemployment rate has remained at or above 4% since May 2024.
The US participation rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 62.5%. The US participation rate has stabilized over the last two years and remains below levels observed prior to the pandemic.
The US employment to population ratio was unchanged at 59.9% in March 2025. As with the participation rate, the US employment rate has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. The US employment rate has declined since mid-2023.
