CANADA NATIONAL BALANCE SHEET ACCOUNTS, Q2 2025

In the second quarter of 2025, Canadian national wealth (the total value of non-financial assets) decreased 0.1% to $17,267.4 billion. This follows growth of 0.9% in the first quarter of 2025. Residential real estate edged down in the second quarter of 2025. Financial assets increased as equity markets remained resilient amid notable uncertainty and volatility in the second quarter. Statistics Canada notes that wealth is not evenly distributed across households, as the wealthiest 20% of households held almost 70% of financial assets.

Total assets, including financial and non-financial assets rose by 1.6% to $70,253.6 billion at the end of Q2 2025, following 0.8% growth in Q1 2025.

Household sector

Household credit market debt as a proportion of household disposable income increased to 174.89% in Q2 2025. 

In Q2 2025, household debt payments increased to 14.41% of disposable income. Mortgage interest payments were up 3 basis points to 5.23% of disposable income, while non-mortgage interest payments were unchanged at 3.61% of disposable income. Principle payments were down for mortgage loans and grew for non-mortgage loans as a share of disposable income.

Government sector

At the end of Q2 2025, federal government net debt (book value) edged up to 33.26% of GDP. Net debt of other levels of government increased to 16.26% of GDP.

Corporate sector

The credit market debt to equity ratio of non-financial private corporations edged down to 59.98 cents of credit market debt for every dollar of equity in Q2 2025, down from 60.03 cents in the first quarter.
