September 16, 2025US RETAIL SALES AND FOOD SERVICE RECEIPTS, AUGUST 2025 Month-over-month (August vs July 2025, seasonally adjusted)
In the advance estimates of U.S retail sales and food service receipts, total sales increased 0.6% from the previous month. Excluding food services receipts, retail trade increased 0.6%. Food service and drinking places receipts increased 0.7%.
Year-over-year (August 2025 vs August 2024, seasonally adjusted)
US retail trade and food services receipts increased 5.0% from the same period last year. Retail trade increased 4.8% and food services and drinking places sales increased 6.5%.
Year-to-date (January-August 2025 vs January-August 2024)
In the first eight months of 2025, retail trade and food services receipts were up 4.4% compared to the same period last year. US retail sales were up 4.2% with gains in all categories except in building material, electronics, and gas stations. The fastest gains (in percentage terms) were in miscellaneous, health/personal care, and non-store retailers. Food service receipts were up 5.8% year-to-date.
