US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, OCTOBER 2025

Month over month (October 2025 vs September 2025, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)

Compared to the previous month, US housing starts were down 4.6% to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,246,000 units. There were increases in single unit starts (+5.4%) and decreases in multi-unit dwelling starts (-22.0%).

The number of residential building permits were down 0.2% to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,412,000 units. Permits were down for single units (-0.5%), while multiple unit permits were up (0.2%).

Year over year (October 2025 vs October 2024)                                                             

Compared to the same month last year, US housing starts were down (-7.8%), with decreases in single unit starts (-7.8%) and increases in multi-unit starts (-7.9%).

Residential building permits were down (-1.1%) year-over-year, with decreases in single units (-9.4%) and increases for permits in multi-unit structures (+16.3%).  

Year-to-date (January-October 2025 vs January-October 2024)                                                         

In the first ten months of 2025, US housing starts were down 0.8%, with declines in single unit starts (-7.0%) and increases in multi-unit starts (+16.9%).

Residential building permits were down 3.9% year-to-date, with decreases in both single units (-6.7%) and increases in multi-unit structures (+1.6%).  

Note: multi-unit refers to structures with 2-4 units as well as structures were more than 5 units.
