CANADA NATIONAL BALANCE SHEET ACCOUNTS, Q1 2026

In the first quarter of 2026, Canadian national wealth (the total value of non-financial assets) increased 2.3% to $17,830.2 billion. This follows a decline of 0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2025. Growth in the first quarter was driven by higher energy and mineral prices, leading to an increase in the value of subsoil asset reserves. Residential real estate rose in the first quarter despite lower resale activity as house prices increased. Financial assets increased on net purchases of mutual funds and continued, albeit slower, growth in equity markets. Statistics Canada notes that wealth is not evenly distributed across households, as the wealthiest 20% of households held 65.7% of net worth in the first quarter.

Total assets, including financial and non-financial assets rose by 1.6% to $75,365.2 billion at the end of Q1 2026, following 1.2% growth in Q4 2025.

Principle payments for mortgage loans were unchanged at 2.76% and increased to 3.38% for non-mortgage loans as a share of disposable income.

Government sector

At the end of Q1 2026, federal government net debt (book value) increased to 33.21% of GDP. Net debt of other levels of government increased to 16.91% of GDP.

Corporate sector
