EU AND EURO AREA TRADE BALANCE IN GOODS, MAY 2026

Month-over-month (May vs April 2026, seasonally adjusted)

In the 27 countries of the European Union, the trade deficit in goods widened by €4.3 billion to €9.0 billion. Exports from the European Union were up 0.7% to €227.1 billion while imports were up by 2.5% to €236.2 billion.

From January 2026, Euro Area now consists of 21 countries after inclusion of Bulgaria. In the 21 countries of the Euro Area, a deficit in goods trade amounted to €5.0 billion, whereas a surplus of €0.8 billion was present in April. Exports from the Euro Area were up 0.6% to €255.7 billion while imports were up by 2.8% to €260.6 billion.

European Union trade in goods with Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom

• The European Union's surplus in goods trade with Canada widened by €101.5 million to €1.7 billion.
• The European Union's surplus in goods trade with the US narrowed by €1.8 billion to €8.6 billion. 
• The European Union surplus in goods trade with the UK narrowed by €204.3 million to €16.5 billion. 
  
  

Euro Area Trade in goods with Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom

For the subset of European Union countries that use the Euro

• the Euro Area surplus in goods trade with Canada widened by €344.5 million to €1.4 billion.
• the Euro Area surplus in goods trade with the US narrowed by €1.0 billion to €7.6 billion. 
• the Euro Area surplus in goods trade with the UK narrowed by €407.2 million to €12.8 billion.
