US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, JUNE 2026

Month over month (June 2026 vs May 2026, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)

US housing starts were up 19.0% from May to June, rising to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,427,000 units. There were decreases in single unit starts (-0.2%) and increases in multi-unit dwelling starts (+76.2%). 

The number of residential building permits were down 3.0% to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,367,000 units. Permits were down more for multiple units (-4.2%) than for single units (-2.4%).

Year over year (June 2026 vs June 2025)                                                             

Compared to the same month last year, US housing starts were up (+3.5%), with increases in multiple unit starts (+17.2%) and decreases in single unit starts (-3.2%).

Residential building permits were down (-2.3%) year-over-year, with decreases in single units (-0.2%) and in multi-unit structures (-5.7%).

Year-to-date (January-June 2026 vs January-June 2025)                                                         

In the first six months of 2026, US housing starts were up 0.4%, with declines in single unit starts (-5.4%) and increases in multi-unit starts (+14.7%).

Residential building permits were down 1.9% year-to-date, with decreases in single units (-4.9%) and increases in multi-unit structures (+3.7%).  

  

Note: multi-unit refers to structures with 2-4 units as well as structures were more than 5 units.
