US TRADE BALANCE, AUGUST 2026

Month over month (August vs July 2026)

The US trade deficit in goods and services widened by $12.7 billion to $105.6 billion in August. The goods deficit widened by $12.8 billion to $136.6 billion while the services surplus widened by $18 million to $31.0 billion.

Total US exports increased 1.4% (+$4.5 billion) to $315.2 billion. Goods exports rose 2.2% (+$4.4 billion) to $205.7 billion, and services exports increased by 0.04% (+$43 million) to $109.5 billion.

Total imports increased 4.3% (+$17.2 billion) to $420.8 billion. Goods imports rose 5.3% ($17.2 billion) to $342.2 billion, and services imports edged up 0.03% (+$25 million) to $78.5 billion.

Year over year (August 2026 vs August 2025) 

Compared with August 2025, the US trade deficit widened by $45.9 billion. The goods deficit widened by $48.4 billion and the services surplus increased by $2.4 billion.

Total exports increased by 10.7% (+$30.4 billion). Goods exports increased 15.3% (+$27.3 billion), services exports increased 3.0% (+$3.2 billion). 

Total imports increased 22.2% (+$76.4 billion). Goods imports increased 28.4% (+$75.6 billion), and services imports increased 0.9% (+$727 million).
