FOOD SERVICES AND DRINKING PLACES, MARCH 2021

Month-over-Month (Mar 2021 vs Feb 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 1.6% to $130.9 million.

Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 9.8% to $4.9 billion. All provinces reported monthly increases in food services and drinking places, with Manitoba (18.3%) reporting the largest gain, and Prince Edward Island (0.4%) reporting the smallest gain.

 

Year-over-Year (Mar 2021 vs Mar 2020, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 32.9%.

Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 18.2%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Prince Edward Island (41.3%) reporting the largest gain and Quebec (5.1%) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

 

Year-to-Date (Jan-Mar 2020 vs Jan-Mar 2021, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts decreased 0.4% (-$1.7 million).

Canada's food services and drinking places receipts decreased 20.5% (-$3.5billion). Only one of the provinces reported year-to-date increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Prince Edward Island (5.7%) reporting the largest gain. Quebec (-32.0%) reported the largest decline.

 

Quarter over Quarter (Jan-Feb 2021Q1 vs 2020Q4, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 8.2% ($29.2 million).

Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 0.2% ($24.8 million). Five provinces reported quarter over quarter increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Manitoba (10.3%) reporting the largest gain and Newfoundland and Labrador (-10.5%) reporting the largest decline.

 

 

NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS

Nova Scotia Year-to-date Sales by Establishment Type (Jan-Mar 2020 vs Jan-Mar 2021, unadjusted for seasonality)

Compared with Jan-Mar 2020, the reductions in food service and drinking place receipts have been most pronounced for Nova Scotia's  special food services (-46.0%) and drinking places (-30.3%) with a small increase for limited service eating places (+11.6%). Receipts of full-service restaurants were down 1.3%.  

 

  

LONG-RUN TREND

Canada and Nova Scotia (2013 to 2021, seasonally adjusted))

Nova Scotia's food services and drinking places receipts sales declined sharply in March 2020 (-32.5%) and April 2020 (-38.7%). Recovery began with rapid gains in May 2020 (+31.8%) and June 2020 (+34.7%). Nova Scotia experienced a short reversal in November and December 2020, but began a slow recovery in January (+18.5%), February 2021 (+1.1%) and March 2021 (1.6%). Compared to February 2020 Food services and drinking places sales are -10.2% below their pre-pandemic levels.

National food services and drinking places sales declined 7.7% to $4.7 billion in October 2020. This decline was mostly due to the second wave of COVID-19 restrictions introduced in several provinces. By March 2021 recovery has begun. National food services and drinking places sales are still 24.3% below their pre-pandemic levels. Provincial food services and drinking places receipts remain between -7.3% and -36.2% below February 2020 levels.
