NOVA SCOTIA INTERNATIONAL GOODS EXPORTS, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2021

With December 2021 reference month results, year-over-year (December 2021 vs December 2020) and annual (2021 vs 2020) in part show rebounds in economic activity from the unprecedented declines observed at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

TREND (Year over year, customs-basis, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia international merchandise exports were $562.0 million in December 2021, an increase of 17.7% compared to December 2020. Nova Scotia export shipments were 16.5% above pre-pandemic levels December 2019 ($482.5 million). Canada merchandise exports increased 20.8% compared to December 2020 and were 15.6% higher compared to December 2019.

Year-over-year (December 2021 vs. December 2020)

International merchandise exports were higher in all provinces in December 2021. The largest increases were in Alberta and New Brunswick. The smallest increase was in Quebec.

 

ANNUAL (2021 vs 2020, customs-basis, unadjusted)

In 2021, Nova Scotia exports totalled $6,166.5 million, an increase of 18.1% compared to 2020. Exports from Nova Scotia were 1.9% above the pre-pandemic 2019 level which were $6,050.8 million in that year.

For 2021, Alberta (+50.1%) had the largest increase, followed by New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and British Columbia. Ontario (+5.1%) had the smallest increase.

The largest dollar increase in year-to-date exports has been farm, fishing and intermediate food products (+$281.8 million, +24.4%), motor vehicles and parts(+$216.0 million, +19.2%), and consumer goods (+$199.7 million, +14.3%). All commodity categories had higher annual shipments in 2021 than 2020, while special transactions had a small decline.

 

 

Nova Scotia Annual by Country (2021 vs 2020, customs-basis, unadjusted)

For 2021 compared to 2020, Nova Scotia exports to the United States have increased 17.9% or $604.0 million. Exports to China were up 5.8% or $37.6 million.

Exports to large economies in Asia (Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore) are up 37.6% (+$93.7 million) and have risen to the largest Euro Area countries (Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain) by 23.8% (+$86.2 million).  Exports to Mexico (+10.0%), United Kingdom (+17.1%), and other countries (+22.7%) were higher after lower shipments in 2020.
