NOVA SCOTIA INTERNATIONAL GOODS EXPORTS, AUGUST 2022

TREND (Year over year, customs-basis, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia international merchandise exports were $560.4 million in August 2022, an increase of 11.8% compared to August 2021. Canada merchandise exports increased 24.7% compared to August 2021.                              


International merchandise exports were higher in all provinces except Newfoundland and Labrador in August 2022. The largest increases were in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

 

Year-to-Date by Province (January-August 2022 vs January-August 2021, customs-basis, unadjusted)

Nova Scotia's exports totalled $4,483.1 million over the first eight months of the year. Year-to-date exports are up 8.0% in Nova Scotia and 28.4% in Canada. The fastest growth has been in Alberta, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. The slowest growth has been in Nova Scotia and Manitoba.


 

 

 

Excluding energy exports, year-to-date exports are up 8.0% in Nova Scotia and 13.4% in Canada. The fastest growth in non-energy exports has been from Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. Non-energy exports have declined in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The largest dollar increase in year-to-date exports has been farm, fishing and intermediate food products (+$169.2 million, +18.1%). Most commodity categories have increased with declines only motor vehicle/parts and other transportation equipment.

 

 

Nova Scotia Year-to-Date by Country (January-August 2022 vs January-August 2021, customs-basis, unadjusted)

For January-August 2022 compared to January-August 2021, merchandise exports increased to the United States (+$229.8 million; +8.5%) and declined to China (-$8.3 million; -1.7%).

Exports to the largest Euro Area countries (Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain) and United Kingdom were up significantly compared to last year.  Exports to large economies in Asia (Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore) have seen smaller growth of 6.4%, as have exports to the other countries category with 2.4% growth.
