US HOUSING STARTS AND BUILDING PERMITS, SEPTEMBER 2022

                                                                                                                                                     

Month over month (Sep 22 vs Aug 22, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)                                                        

US residential building permits increased 1.4% over the previous month to average 1,564,000. Single unit structures were down 3.1%. Structures with 2 to 4 units were up 2.1%. Structures with 5 units or more were down up 8.2%.                                                   

US housing starts decreased 8.1% over the previous month to average 1,439,000.                                                             

               

Year over year (Sep 22 vs Sep 21, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)                                                   

US residential building permits decreased 3.2% over the same month last year. Permits for single unit structures decreased 17.3%. Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units remained unchanged at 48,000 in September 2022. Permits for structures with 5 units or more increased 25.5%.

US housing starts decreased 7.7% over the same month last year. Starts for single unit structures decreased 18.5%. Starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 16.5%.                                                           

                                                               

Year to date (Jan-Sep-2022 vs Jan-Sep-2021, seasonally adjusted annualized rates)                                            

US residential building permits increased 0.4% over the same period last year to average 1,731,000. Permits for single unit structures declined 8.4%. Permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 0.8%. Permits structures with 5 units or more went up 16.4%. 

Housing starts are up 1.8% over the same period last year to average 1,609,000. Starts for single unit structures declined 5.1%. Starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 17.9%.
