Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts decreased 0.7% to $188.7 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased by 0.5% from to $8.114 billion. Across Canada, 6 of 10 provinces reported increasing receipts for food services and drinking places, led by Alberta.
Year-over-year (July 2024 vs July 2023)
Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 3.3% year-over-year. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.8%. With the exception of Prince Edward Island, there year-over-year gains in nine provinces led by Alberta.
Year-to-date (January-July 2024 vs January-July 2023)
Nova Scotia's year-to-date food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.6%. Nationally food services and drinking places receipts increased 4.3%. All provinces reported a year-to-date increase in receipts. New Brunswick reported the fastest percentage gain in year-to-date food service receipts while Prince Edward Island was the slowest increase.
Nova Scotia's year-to-date gains in food service receipts are attributable to the increases in limited service eating places, though there were smaller rises at full-service restaurants and specialty food service providers (such as mobile and catering). In percentage terms, Nova Scotia drinking places reported lower year-to-date receipts compared to the same period last year.
Trends
Nova Scotia's food service receipts exhibit more volatility than national food service receipts, but in recent months Nova Scotia's receipts have grown slower than the national trend.
