LABOUR FORCE SURVEY, MAY 2024

                                                                           

MONTH OVER MONTH (May 2024 vs April 2024, seasonally adjusted)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 600 (+0.1%) to 549,900
  • Employment decreased 900 (-0.2%) to 514,600
  • Unemployment increased 1,500 (+4.5%) to 35,200
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.3 percentage points to 6.4%

In Canada

  • Labour force increased 54,500 (+0.2%) to 21,883,000
  • Employment increased 26,700 (+0.1%) to 20,517,800
  • Unemployment increased 27,700 (+2.1%) to 1,365,100
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 6.2%

In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 2,600 (+0.9%) to 296,000
  • Employment increased 1,200 (+0.4%) to 279,600
  • Unemployment increased 1,500 (+10.1%) to 16,400
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.4 percentage points to 5.5%

 

YEAR OVER YEAR (May 2024 vs May 2023)

In Nova Scotia,

  • Labour force increased 25,400 (+4.8%)
  • Employment increased 21,000 (+4.3%)
  • Unemployment increased 4,200 (+13.5%)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.5 percentage points

In Canada

  • Labour force increased 652,300 (+3.1%)
  • Employment increased 402,300 (+2.0%)
  • Unemployment increased 250,000 (+22.4%)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.9 percentage points

In Halifax,  (3-month moving average) 

  • Labour force increased 19,700 (+7.1%)
  • Employment increased 17,200 (+6.6%)
  • Unemployment increased 2,500 (+18.0%)
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.5 percentage points
