October 21, 2014COMMUNITY PROFILE FOR OCTOBER: SALT SPRINGS As shown in the population change map below (click on the image to enlarge the map), population increase is appeared to be in urban areas, especially central Nova Scotia, while population decrease is more likely to be in rural communities. However, it is noticeable that some of the rural communities see relatively higher population increase as compared to the surrounding communities. For example, Salt Springs, a rural community in Antigonish County, sees 10.7% increase in population as compared to 2001. It also has a fairly young age structure with 45.8% of the population under age of 40 (see Figure 1: Population by Age Groups for 2011).

PopulationBased on the 2011 Census of Population, Salt Springs has a population of 1,389 which is 10.7% higher than in 2001. In 2011, 25.5% of the population was under the age of 20 and 10.5% was 65 years or older.
In comparison, Nova Scotia has a population of 921,725 which is 1.5% higher than in 2001. 21.2% of the population was under the age of 20 and 16.6% was 65 years or older.
Median and Average IncomeIn 2011, the median income for individuals in Salt Springs was $33,281 a year, compared with the median of $27,570 for Nova Scotia. Families in Salt Springs had a median income of $85,049, compared with the median of $68,102 for Nova Scotia.

In 2011, the average income for individuals in Salt Springs was $39,499 a year, compared with the average of $35,478 for Nova Scotia. Families in Salt Springs had a average income of $87,951, compared with the average of $79,838 for Nova Scotia.
EmploymentIn 2011, the employment rate for Salt Springs residents aged 15 and over was 65.7%, and the unemployment rate for Salt Springs was 8.6%.
