TERANET-NATIONAL BANK HOUSE PRICE INDEX, JANUARY 2018

Halifax home prices as measured by the Teranet-National Bank House Price were down 1.0 per cent in January over December 2017. The Halifax price level was 2.5 per cent above the same month in 2017. The national year-over-year price gain slowed to 8.7 per cent in January.

National resale home prices measured by the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index were up 0.3 per cent in January on a monthly basis, with faster gains in Vancouver and Victoria. Montreal and Toronto also showed positive gains. All other cities in the component index reported lower prices in January, including Halifax, Quebec City, Ottawa-Gatineau, Hamilton, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary.

Despite the relatively slow monthly growth in January, resale home prices are up 8.7 per cent for the 11-city composite of the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index.  The strongest gains are still reported in Ontario and British Columbia, but year-over-year price gains are reported in Montreal, Winnipeg and Halifax as well.
