JAPAN CPI INFLATION, FEBRUARY 2018

Japanese consumer price inflation continued to accelerate in February, reaching a year-over-year pace of 1.5 per cent for all items - the fourth month of rising inflation after stalling in the summer of 2017.  Although higher energy and food prices account for much of the increase in Japan's all items inflation, underlying inflation is also rising.  Excluding fresh food and energy, Japan's inflation was 0.5 per cent year-over-year in February.

Energy price growth has slowed in recent months, but still remains at 7.0 per cent year-over-year in February.  Food prices were up 3.0 per cent, similar to the pace observed in January.

Japanese inflation has been persistently below inflation reported in Canada and Nova Scotia for much of the last two years. February results show accelerating inflation for both Canada and Japan.
