US TRADE BALANCE, MAY 2018

 

In May 2018, the US goods and services trade deficit narrowed to -$43.1 billion, a $3.0 billion improvement compared with a revised April deficit of -$46.1 billion.  The deficit in goods trade was improved by $2.6 billion to -$65.8 billion.  The services surplus increased by $452 million to $22.7 billion.

On a year-to-date basis, the US trade deficit was $244.8 billion for the first five months of 2018, with a goods deficit of $354.7 billion and a services surplus of $109.9 billion. Compared with last year's year to date figures, the goods deficit widened $22.3 billion and the services surplus grew by $4.4 billion. Year-to-date, the total trade in goods and services deficit widened by $17.9 billion compared to the first five months of 2017.

Monthly exports increased by $4.1 billon, including a rise of $3.7 billion in goods exports and $392 million in services exports. US imports were up $1.1 billion in May, reflecting a $1.1 billion increase in goods imports and a $59 million decline in service imports.
