TERANET-NATIONAL BANK HOUSE PRICE INDEX, AUGUST 2018

In August, Halifax home prices as measured by the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index decreased 0.6 per cent compared to the previous month. The Halifax price level was up 4.6 per cent over August 2017.

National year-over-year price growth slowed to 1.4 per cent in August.  This is the smallest year-over-year increase in the 11-city composite since late 2009.                                                         

National resale home prices measured by the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index rose by 0.2 per cent month-to-month, with all cities except Halifax, Calgary and Vancouver reporting higher prices in August. 

Year-over-year, resale home prices are up 1.4 per cent for the 11-city composite of the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index, with 7 of the 11 cities reporting higher housing prices compared to one year ago.  The largest increases were reported in Vancouver and Ottawa/Gatineau, while Toronto, Hamilton, Edmonton and Calgary all reported declines. 

Comparing the first eight months of 2018 with the same period last year, resale home prices were up 4.8 per cent for the 11-city composite of the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index.  The strongest gains were reported in Vancouver and Victoria, followed by Halifax and Montreal.
