BUILDING PERMITS
US residential building permits increased 5.0 per cent in October compared to the revised September estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,461,000. This is 14.1 per cent above the October 2018 estimate of 1,281,000.
Year over year (Oct-19 vs Oct-18), permits for single unit structures increased 7.4 per cent. Permits for structures with 5 units or more increased 27.5 per cent and permits for structures with 2 to 4 units increased 20.5 per cent over October 2018.
In the first 10 months of 2019, building permits are up 0.2 per cent. Permits are down for single unit structures (2.6 per cent), up for structures with 2 to 4 units (2.8 per cent), and up for structures with 5 units or more (5.4 per cent).
HOUSING STARTS
US housing starts increased 3.8 per cent in October compared to the revised September estimate, to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1,314,000. This is 8.5 per cent above the October 2018 estimate of 1,211,000.
Year over year (Oct-19 vs Oct-18), starts for single unit structures increased 8.2 per cent, and starts for structures with 5 or more units increased 10.7 per cent.
Year-to-date (Jan-October 2019), housing starts are down 0.7 per cent with declines in starts for single unit structures (1.0 per cent), and increases in starts for structures with 5 or more units (0.5 per cent).
