MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, DECEMBER AND ANNUAL 2019

CANADA

In Canada December 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments decreased 0.7% to $56.4 billion over November 2019 and increased 0.1% over December 2018.

Compared to November 2019, overall sales decreased in 11 of 21 industries representing 42.6% of all manufacturing sectors. Durable goods decreased 1.3% to $29.5 billion over Nov 2019 and decreased 2.4% over December 2018. Non-durable goods were unchanged at $26.9 billion over Nov 2019 and increased 2.9% over December 2018.

Inventory to sales ratio increased to 1.55 in December 2019. Unfilled orders decreased -0.1% to $97.6 billion. Unfilled orders were up in 10 of 21 industries with the largest in Ship and Boat Building, and Chemical manufacturing offset by declines in Computer& electronic and Fabricated metal. Industries. New orders decreased -0.6% to $56.4 billion over November 2019, as a result of decreased new orders in Aerospace Products and Parts, Plastics and Rubber products.

 

 

PROVINCES

On a seasonally adjusted, month-over-month basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 6 provinces in December 2019 over November 2019. Nova Scotia had the largest growth at 7.3%. Saskatchewan shipment growth decreased 7.8%. In Canada shipments decreased 0.7%.

 

On a seasonally adjusted year-over-year basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 4 provinces in December 2019 over December 2018. New Brunswick had the largest growth at 58.7%. Saskatchewan shipment growth decreased 16.9%. Nova Scotia shipments increased 1.0%. In Canada shipments increased 0.1%.

 

On a seasonally adjusted, Annual basis, Manufacturing sales increased in 6 provinces in 2019. Prince Edward Island had the largest growth at 18.1%. Saskatchewan shipment growth decreased 9.2%. Nova Scotia shipments increased 4.3%. In Canada shipments increased 0.5%.

In Nova Scotia December 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments increased 7.3% to $801.8 million over November 2019 and increased 1.0% over December 2018.

Nova Scotia manufacturing shipments have been on an upward trend since the beginning of 2014 with rising durable (i.e. wood products, metal products, machinery, transportation equipment) and rising non-durable (i.e. food, paper/pulp, chemical, plastic and rubber) shipments. Seasonally adjusted non-durable shipments have risen from $405.4 million in January 2014 to $492.2 million in December 2019. Durable shipments have increased from $170.1 million in January 2014 to $309.6 million in December 2019.

Annual

In Nova Scotia 2019, seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Shipments increased 4.3% ($388.5 million) to $9.3 billion. Non-durable goods industries, accounting for 67% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 1.5% ($95.9 million) to $6.3 billion. Durable goods industries, accounting for 33% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 10.7% ($292.5 million) to $3.0 billion.

 

 

NOVA SCOTIA SECTORS

Unadjusted

In 2019, unadjusted Manufacturing Shipments increased 4.3% ($389.4 million) over 2018.

  • Non-durable goods shipments, accounting for 68% of Manufacturing Shipments, increased 1.6% ($99.5 million),
  • Plastics & rubber products with a 23% share increased 2.9% ($60.7 million).
  • Other non-durables with a 44% share increased 0.9% ($38.8 million).
  • Durable goods industries with a 32% share increased 10.6% ($289.9 million).
  • Wood product manufacturing with a 4% share decreased 9.1% ($39.6 million).
  • Fabricated metal Prod with a 4% share increased 4.0% ($12.7 million).
  • Machinery manufacturing with a 3% share increased 17.4% ($38.0 million).
  • Other durables with a 22% share increased 15.7% ($278.8 million).

 

CENSUS METROPOLITAN AREAS (CMA) SECTORS

 

HALIFAX CMA

In Halifax, month-to-month/year-over-year, unadjusted manufacturing shipments have Increased 13.8% to $259.6 million over November 2019 and Increased 31.9% over December 2018. Non-durable shipments have declined 9.3% to $74.7 million over November 2019 and declined 4.2% over December 2018. Durable shipments have Increased 26.9% to $185.0million over November 2019 and Increased 55.7% over December 2010.

In Halifax, annual unadjusted manufacturing shipments have increased 11.3% to $2.6 billion 2018. Non-durable manufacturing shipments increased 3.0% to $10 billion. Durable manufacturing shipments increased 17.2% to $1.6 billion.

 

THE REST OF NOVA SCOTIA

 In the rest of Nova Scotia, month-to-month/year-over-year, unadjusted manufacturing shipments have declined 6.3% to $489.6 million over November 2019 and declined 8.3% over December 2018. Non-durable shipments have declined 9.1% to $375.2 million over November 2019 and declined 11.2% over December 2018. Durable shipments have Increased 4.2% to $114.4million over November 2019 and Increased 2.9% over December 2018.

In the rest of Nova Scotia, Annual unadjusted manufacturing shipments have increased 1.9% to $6.7 billion over 2018. Non-durable manufacturing shipments increased 1.3% to $5.3 billion. Durable manufacturing shipments increased 3.9% to $1.4 billion.
