April 02, 2020CANADA TRADE BALANCE, FEBRUARY 2020 GOODS
In February 2020, Canadian goods trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted) had a deficit $982.7 million. This is a narrower deficit than the $1,656.5 million reported in January 2020. Compared with January 2020, exports of goods were up 0.5 per cent to $48.3 billion. Canada's goods exports were up 0.3 per cent compared to February 2019. Compared with January 2020, imports of goods were down 0.8 per cent to $49.3 billion. Canada's goods imports were down 4.3 per cent over February 2019.
In February 2020, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted), surplus with the United States widened to $3,747.2 millions.
In February 2020, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted), deficit with China narrowed to $1,291.3 millions.
In February 2020, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted), deficit with the European Union widened to $1,205.4 millions.
SERVICES
Canada's trade in services are categorized into: commercial services, travel services, transportation services and government services.
In February 2020, Canada's deficit in services trade narrowed slightly to $1,738.0 million (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted) compared with a deficit of $1,761.0 million in January 2020. Service imports were down 0.5 per cent from January to February ($12.7 billion) while service exports were down 0.3 per cent to $11.0 billion.
GOODS & SERVICES
The overall balance of trade is calculated by summing the value of goods and services.
In February 2020, Canada's overall trade deficit narrowed to -$2,720.7 million (goods+services, balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted), compared to a deficit of -$3,417.5 million in January 2020. Imports of goods and services were down 0.8 per cent from January to February, at $62.0 billion. Exports of goods and services were up by 0.4 per cent from January to February, rising to $59.3 billion.
