LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - MARCH 2020

In Nova Scotia March 2020,  (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 4.1 per cent (20,700) from February 2020 to 490,200 and decreased 1.5 per cent  (7,500) over March 2019
  • Employment decreased 5.3 per cent (24,800) from February 2020 to 446,200 and decreased 4.4 per cent (20,600) over March 2019
  • Unemployment increased 10.8 per cent (4,300) from February 2020 to 44,100 and increased 42.7 per cent (13,200) over March 2019
  • Unemployment Rate increased 1.2 percentage points from February 2020 to 9.0 per cent.

 

In Canada March 2020,  (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 2.9 per cent (597,500) from February 2020 to 19,725,700 and decreased 1.9 per cent (373,800) over March 2019
  • Employment decreased 5.3 per cent (1,010,700) from February 2020 to 18,178,700 and decreased 4.0 per cent (765,200) over March 2019
  • Unemployment increased 36.4 per cent (413,200) from February 2020 to 1,547,000 and increased 33.9 per cent (391,400) over March 2019
  • Unemployment Rate increased 2.2 percentage points from February 2020 to 7.8 per cent.

 

In Halifax March 2020,  (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 0.9 per cent (2,400) from February 2020 to 256,000 and increased 2.3 per cent (5,700) over March 2019
  • Employment decreased 1.2 per cent (2,800) from February 2020 to 238,500 and increased 0.3 per cent (600) over March 2019
  • Unemployment increased 2.3 per cent (400) from February 2020 to 17,500 and increased 42.3 per cent (5,200) over March 2019
  • Unemployment Rate increased 0.2 percentage points from February 2020 to 6.8 per cent.

 

STATISTICS CANADA QUOTES

“Employment in educational services declined by 9.1% (or 125,000) in March, the largest monthly decline in the sector since comparable data became available in 1976.

Most of the decline was observed in Quebec (-73,000) and Ontario (-25,000) while there were smaller declines in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia [-2,000 m/m-1; -5,700 y/y-1 to 33,600] and Manitoba. Employment in educational services was little changed in the other three provinces.”
