US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, MARCH 2020

The US Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers decreased 0.4 per cent in March (seasonally adjusted monthly growth), this is the largest monthly decline since January 2015. This month, the index for energy (-5.8 per cent) account for most of the decrease in the all items index due to a sharp decline in gasoline index (-10.5 per cent) while the food index rose 0.3 per cent as the food at home index rose 0.5 per cent.

The index for all items less food and energy declined 0.1 percent in March, its first monthly decline since January 2010. The indexes for airline fares, lodging away from home, apparel, and new vehicles declined in March. This month, the index for shelter was unchanged and the indexes that increased include medical care, used cars and trucks, motor vehicle insurance, and education. 

Year over year (March 2020 compared to March 2019) consumer prices were up 1.5 per cent (not seasonally adjusted). For the previous 12 months, the index for all-items less food and energy was up 2.1 per cent, the food index was up 1.9 per cent and the energy index declined 5.7 per cent.
