LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - APRIL 2020

In Nova Scotia April 2020,  (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 8.3 per cent (40,600) from March 2020 to 449,600 and decreased 10.1 per cent  (50,300) over April 2019
  • Employment decreased 11.3 per cent (50,600) from March 2020 to 395,600 and decreased 15.0 per cent (69,600) over April 2019
  • Unemployment increased 22.4 per cent (9,900) from March 2020 to 54,000 and increased 55.6 per cent (19,300) over April 2019
  • Unemployment Rate increased 3 percentage points from March 2020 to 12.0 per cent.

In Canada April 2020,  (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 5.7 per cent (1,122,500) from March 2020 to 18,603,200 and decreased 7.9 per cent (1,593,000) over April 2019
  • Employment decreased 11.0 per cent (1,993,800) from March 2020 to 16,184,900 and decreased 15.0 per cent (2,856,700) over April 2019
  • Unemployment increased 56.3 per cent (871,300) from March 2020 to 2,418,300 and increased 109.4 per cent (1,263,700) over April 2019
  • Unemployment Rate increased 5.2 percentage points from March 2020 to 13.0 per cent.

In Halifax April 2020,  (seasonally adjusted, month-over-month and year-over-year):

  • Labour force decreased 3.0 per cent (7,800) from March 2020 to 248,200 and decreased 0.9 per cent (2,300) over April 2019
  • Employment decreased 5.2 per cent (12,500) from March 2020 to 226,000 and decreased 4.8 per cent (11,500) over April 2019
  • Unemployment increased 26.9 per cent (4,700) from March 2020 to 22,200 and increased 70.8 per cent (9,200) over April 2019
  • Unemployment Rate increased 2.1 percentage points from March 2020 to 8.9 per cent
